The Backstory
Armadillo backstory

They say enlightenment comes from unlikely places, and for Eddie Wilson, it was an out-of-order bathroom. That's because during an impromptu trip to the Cactus Club parking lot in 1970, he spotted an empty warehouse at 525 1/2 Barton Springs Road. And while most people would have seen an old, beat-up, busted-out building, Eddie envisioned something much different: a music venue.

Armadillo backstory

A stage that, over the next decade, would host the most legendary acts in music. A place that would make Austin, Texas the "Live Music Capital of the World." And he called it: The Armadillo World Headquarters. Soon, the 'Dillo would become a legend in its own right--not just for the bands that played there, but for artistic expression, originality, and the free-spirit vibes and life-loving people who called it home.

Armadillo backstory

In the next 10 years, The Armadillo would become one of the most iconic and famed venues in the world. A place where every A-list artist wanted to play, from Willie Nelson to Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison to Van Halen. A place where everyone was welcome. And where laughter and kindness flowed just as freely as cold Lone Star Beer. Because at The Armadillo, good times weren't just encouraged--they were guaranteed.

Up until then, you never saw

the cowboys and hippies getting along. But before you knew it, the cowboys started growing their hair out...and the hippies started wearing hats."

When the History

of the music business is written, it'll be mentioned several times."
